WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Roopali Desai to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit:

“Roopali Desai has dedicated her impressive career to equal justice for all. The kind of extensive and broad civil rights experience she brings to the federal bench, including experience defending our democracy and our freedom to vote, is much needed in our judiciary. Desai also makes history, as she will be the first South Asian judge ever to serve on this court. We thank the senators who voted to confirm Desai, who will bring vital and underrepresented perspectives to the Ninth Circuit.”
