WASHINGTON – Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Judge Sarah Merriam to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

“Judge Merriam’s substantial time as a judge — and as a public defender who helped ensure access to justice for people who could not afford an attorney — will strengthen the Second Circuit. We need more highly qualified jurists who have worked to uphold the rights of all people, particularly those impacted by the criminal-legal system, at all levels of our federal judiciary. Judge Merriam brings that underrepresented experience to this important court.”
