WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate’s vote to confirm Arianna Freeman to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit:

“Arianna Freeman’s impressive commitment to equal justice makes her eminently qualified to serve on the Third Circuit. Her experience as a public defender, protecting the rights of the people most marginalized by our criminal-legal system, brings important and fresh perspectives to our judiciary. It’s also notable that Freeman is the first woman of color ever to serve on the Third Circuit, making this court more reflective of the communities it serves. We know that judges with diverse professional and personal backgrounds improve judicial decision making, making our courts work better for all of us. We applaud the senators who voted to confirm her and look forward to her tenure on the bench.”
