Civil Rights Community Celebrates Brittney Griner’s Return Home

WASHINGTONMaya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on the release of Brittney Griner from a Russian prison:

“Brittney Griner’s release from a Russian prison is a joyous ending to a profound injustice. For more than nine months, Brittney was wrongfully detained, used as a political pawn and subjected to horrific and inhumane conditions. We welcome our WNBA champion’s return, and we applaud the courageous leadership of the Biden administration for successfully securing Brittney’s freedom and safely returning her back to her wife, family and friends.. The civil rights community celebrates her freedom, honors her humanity, and uplifts the incredible strength she and her family have shown during this grave human rights violation. Brittney, we’re so glad you’re coming home.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 230 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
