WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Judge Jeffrey Cummings to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois:

“We applaud the Senate’s confirmation of Judge Jeffrey Cummings to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. His professional and lived experience will serve those seeking justice in the district court well. Before becoming a magistrate judge, he litigated a broad range of civil rights issues, including employment discrimination, voting rights, and police accountability. Judges who come from diverse communities and legal backgrounds — like Judge Cummings — bring important and far too often underrepresented perspectives to our federal courts. His confirmation is a step forward in our work to ensure that our judiciary fulfills its promise of equal justice under law.”
