WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Susan DeClercq to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan:

“The confirmation of Susan DeClercq to the Eastern District of Michigan is a critically important step toward ensuring our federal courts reflect and represent the communities they serve. Her deep commitment to equal justice — including working extensively for those who have been discriminated against based on their disability — and experience enforcing civil rights laws will greatly benefit our judiciary. In addition to this incredible professional experience, which remains underrepresented on the federal bench, DeClercq makes history as the first lifetime judge of East Asian descent in Michigan and just the second AAPI woman to serve as a lifetime judge in the state’s history.

“We applaud the Senate for today’s confirmation and urge the White House and our senators to continue working to fill all judicial vacancies with nominees who are highly qualified, professionally and demographically diverse, and committed to equal justice for all.”
