WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Judge Eumi Lee to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California:

“Judge Eumi Lee’s confirmation to the Northern District of California brings both crucial professional and demographic diversity to our federal courts. Judge Lee is dedicated to equal justice, and she has spent much of her career rooting out disparities in our criminal-legal system. Significantly, she becomes just the third AAPI woman and the fifth AAPI judge to receive a lifetime appointment to this court — helping to ensure our courts better reflect and represent the communities they serve. As we applaud Judge Lee’s confirmation, we urge the White House and our senators to continue filling all judicial vacancies with diverse and highly qualified judges who are committed to civil and human rights. Time is of the essence.”
