WASHINGTON — Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Judge Michelle Williams Court to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California:
“The Leadership Conference commends the Senate for confirming Judge Michelle Williams Court to the federal bench. Judge Court’s exceptional legal experience, including as a fair-minded judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court, demonstrates a deep commitment to protecting and defending the rights of all people. Her robust career has included advancing a broad array of civil and human rights, and this underrepresented professional experience is greatly needed in our judiciary. Judge Court also brings vital lived experience and will be the fifth Black woman to serve as a lifetime judge on the Central District of California. We celebrate her confirmation.
“We thank President Biden and Senators Butler and Padilla for their leadership in nominating Judge Court, and we urge the Senate to continue this critically important work towards building an equal justice judiciary.”
Judge Court is the 60th Black lifetime judge confirmed during the Biden administration. Before this administration, no president had appointed more than 37 Black lifetime judges in a single term.
