WASHINGTON — Liz King, senior director for education equity at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement after the Trump administration released a trio of executive orders seeking to scare schools away from teaching and supporting their students:

“It is outrageous that President Trump would use the power of the presidency to scare families and teachers away from supporting children in their community. Parents and educators have worked together for years to ensure that every child is treated with respect, has the chance to see themselves and their classmates reflected in the curriculum, and is prepared to participate in our multiracial democracy. This work must move forward, not backward.

“Once again attacking the dignity, safety, and wellbeing of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex children is unacceptable and will make every child less safe. Seeking to control the curriculum that local schools and districts use, and specifically trying to deny access to information that students need to wrestle with and understand difficult aspects of our national past, is legally dubious educational malpractice. President Trump must reverse course and the Department of Education must clearly educate the president about the rights and wellbeing of our nation’s young people.”
