WASHINGTON — Liz King, senior director for education equity at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement ahead of the nomination hearing for Kim Richey to serve as assistant secretary of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Education:
“In the midst of unrelenting attacks on students’ civil rights, senators must demand answers from OCR nominee Kim Richey during her nomination hearing. Every student deserves to attend school free from the burdens of discrimination, to be safe and welcomed, and to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Any individual seeking to lead the Office for Civil Rights must have a demonstrated record of support for civil rights laws and marginalized communities. How would Kim Richey protect students while the Trump administration is actively hurting them? How would she enforce the law when Secretary McMahon is misrepresenting the law? How would she provide families the thorough and efficient justice they deserve when the office has been cut in half? Senators must ask Kim Richey if she will show up on the side of our students, or whether she will show up on the side of the Trump-McMahon agenda of discrimination, exclusion, and ignorance.”
