The Leadership Conference reveals the real harms of the Big Horrific Bill
WASHINGTON — The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights breaks down the facts about the Trump administration’s Big Horrific Bill that would affect Americans for years to come:
The Senate has dealt the American people a devastating blow that could resonate for years and impact generations to come. Here is how our civil and human rights have been and could be destroyed, decimated, and eliminated if the House of Representatives doesn’t stop this big, horrific bill.
FACT: The bill includes more than $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. That means limited access to critical health care services and an increase in hungry children and families. And these harms will disproportionately affect children, rural communities, veterans, people with disabilities, immigrants, and people of color.
FACT: The bill spends around $150 billion to build a mass deportation machine that will trample on civil rights and liberties. It includes a massive giveaway to the private prison industry, which profits from overcrowded and inhumane conditions. And it would drastically expand ICE digital surveillance programs. It will effectively create a police state that will harm immigrants and citizens alike.
FACT: Health care resources will be out of reach for more people, with as many as 200 Planned Parenthood health centers at risk of shutting down. The health and lives of 1.1 million patients — who benefit from gynecological care, mammogram screenings, and STD testing and treatment — are at risk.
FACT: The bill is the reverse Robin Hood — utility and food bills will rise, student loan payments will increase, and vital programs that have helped ease the financial burden for borrowers will disappear.
No one voted for cuts to schools, health care, and food assistance in order to benefit billionaires. Congress must make the wealthiest households and corporations pay their fair share in taxes so that we can invest in communities and grow our economy — not make cuts to life-sustaining programs in order to pay for tax breaks. The fight is not over as the legislation now moves to the House. We need to hold our representatives accountable and work to protect our civil and social rights.
