WASHINGTONMaya Wiley, CEO and president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s emergency order allowing the administration to fire Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter from the Federal Trade Commission:

“By allowing any president to fire any Senate-confirmed commissioner from an independent and bipartisan agency, our Supreme Court is setting a dangerous precedent that puts the safety and security of the American public at risk. A strong and independent FTC protects us against a tech industry primed to move fast and break things. These deceptive practices dupe consumers into paying more for less, while biased algorithms limit our access to housing, credit, education, employment, and public accommodations. Silencing voices because they disagree with the administration in power is distinctly un-American.

“Without a balanced and bipartisan FTC, consumers across the country are left vulnerable to unacceptable harm while private corporations and CEOs accumulate even more wealth at our expense. In December, the court has an opportunity to make the right decision and restore Commissioner Slaughter, a champion for civil rights, to the commission to fight for all of us. We will be watching.”
