Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement:
The decision by the United States Department of Justice to seek dismissal of charges in the case of the violent killing of Breonna Taylor is a gross miscarriage of justice. This Department of Justice has made crystal clear that it will not protect the basic civil and constitutional right for a Black woman to be safe from police violence in her own home.
Breonna Taylor was killed in her bed. The federal government brought federal civil rights charges because the evidence demanded it. Now, those same charges are being abandoned not because justice was served, but because this administration has made clear that we are less safe because it refuses to hold federal and local law enforcement accountable.
It signals to every law enforcement officer in this country that they don’t have to worry about the federal government holding them accountable to preserving our civil rights. It signals to every Black woman and Black man in America that our lives are negotiable.
That is not justice. Justice in this country is not the property of those in power. It belongs to all of us, and we intend to claim it.
