WASHINGTON — Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement:

“The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has called on corporate America to affirm its commitment to equal opportunity that supports civil rights laws, voting rights, and equal representation. The Leadership Conference stands with the CBC and joins our voice to this clarion call. The Supreme Court’s Callais decision not only got the facts of racial discrimination wrong, it ripped the fabric of the Voting Rights Act that was knit in a bipartisan Congress, and gave permission to deny Black voters, one third of the population in states like Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and South Carolina, the fair and meaningful opportunity to elect leaders who will be accountable to them.

“For seventy-six years, The Leadership Conference has been on the front lines of advancing and protecting civil rights. The CBC itself, the largest in the history of this nation, is the legacy of the civil rights movement that is under attack because the now-weakened Voting Rights Act protected the voices of Black voters.

“Yesterday marked the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, a painful reminder that the fight for racial justice did not end with statements, donations, or temporary commitments. Across the country, we are witnessing blatant discrimination against Black voters. Black communities and allies who recognize that the project of creating a more perfect union is under direct attack are mobilizing.

“We will continue to work in partnership with the CBC, corporations, partners and allies to protect our multi-racial democracy from its enemies. In this moment, communities across the country are hungry for principled corporations and protectors of civil rights.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 240 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.
