About the Role:
We seek a Policy Assistant to join the Government Affairs Department and perform various administrative tasks to support the organization’s civil and human rights federal advocacy. The assistant will have the opportunity to help build and monitor administrative infrastructure that is critical to the success of the team and organization.
This assistant is an individual contributor and will report to the Managing Director, Government Affairs. This position is part of the collective bargaining unit.
What You Will Do:
- Handle all administrative support for the Government Affairs Department and its programs, including document tracking, agenda drafting, and listserv maintenance.
- Monitor and track legislative, administrative, court, and organization advocacy developments to assemble weekly and monthly digests.
- Support the Government Affairs Department and its programs in preparation for and follow-up from internal and external meetings, briefings, and other convenings (e.g., handling meeting correspondence; collecting meeting RSVPs; reserving conference rooms; ordering food; duplicating materials; managing Zoom calls).
- Draft, edit, and monitor invitations, emails, and other communications for the Government Affairs Department and its programs.
- Organize department documents on the department drive, the organization’s website, and the organization’s internal portal.
- Maintain department calendar and contribute department activities to the organization-wide calendar.
- Ensure that the Government Affairs department’s day-to-day operations, deadlines, duties, and other responsibilities are carried out seamlessly.
- Assist in identifying, implementing, and perfecting administrative protocols and processes for the Government Affairs department and its programs.
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned, including coordinating special projects and initiatives.
What You Will Bring:
- A bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience in an administrative or executive assistant role where duties included schedule management, office coordination, and/or project management.
- The ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and to handle complex and competing administrative priorities under tight deadlines.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to pay attention to detail.
- Experience in MS Office, including Word and Excel, Google Drive applications, database systems, and Internet research tools.
- Strong communication skills with a high degree of self-motivation and ability to work independently.
- Robust skillset in planning and coordination with various levels within an organization as well as external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, confidentiality, and discretion.
- Desire and ability to work with diverse groups of people.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to get along well with all staff.
- A demonstrated commitment to civil and human rights.

Salary Range – $51,389 – $53,190, dependent on years of related experience.

Office Re-opening Statement
Currently, staff has the option to work from the office or home while we determine our long-term policy on remote and hybrid work. Please note this position is not permanently remote and over time the person filling this role may be required to work on occasion or regularly from the Washington, DC-based office.
