On April 9, 2025, The Leadership Conference Education Fund joined an amicus curiae brief in the Supreme Court case of Mahmoud v. Taylor. The case, which will be heard by the court on April 22, will consider whether public schools burden parents’ religious exercise when they compel elementary school children to participate in instruction on gender and sexuality against their parents’ religious convictions and without notice or opportunity to opt out. The brief argues that welcoming, respectful school climates that inculcate respect for the wide range of identities in the school environment and entail the exchange of diverse viewpoints benefit all students and that protecting children’s well-being is a long-recognized compelling government interest. The brief was authored by Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc., PFLAG, Inc., and National Women’s Law Center.
