Dear Senator,

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 240 national organizations committed to promoting and protecting the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States, urges you to oppose S. 6, the so-called Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, when it reaches the Senate floor.

Abortion is health care, and everyone should be free to make their own decisions about their bodies, their lives, and their futures. S. 6 will make it more difficult for pregnant people to access the necessary and life-saving medical care they need. It attempts to interfere with the provision of medical care by placing rigid and harmful requirements on providers and threatening them with criminal and civil penalties. It espouses harmful rhetoric that is grounded in neither medical nor scientific evidence. This legislation furthers the goal of anti-abortion extremists to make this care inaccessible across the country, and it will cause disproportionate harm to those who already experience barriers to health care access, including communities of color, LGBTQI+ people, people with low incomes, people with disabilities, those who live in rural communities, and others. Everyone deserves access to the medical care that they need, free from interference from politicians who have no place inserting themselves into decisions that should remain between families and their medical providers.

We urge you to oppose this misleading legislation that will harm patients seeking reproductive health care. The Leadership Conference intends to include your position on S. 6 in our voting record for the 119th Congress. If you have any questions, please contact Peggy Ramin, senior policy counsel, at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Jesselyn McCurdy
Executive Vice President for Government Affairs
