Dear Senator,
On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 240 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States, we urge you to vote to advance H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, when the bill reaches the Senate floor. Although the legislation does not expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to the full extent needed, it is a meaningful step toward reducing child poverty and would help millions of families afford essentials like food, rent, and child care. Additionally, the legislation would benefit children of all races and ethnicities, including more than 1 in 3 of all Black and Latino children under 17.
As we explained in a letter sent alongside other civil rights organizations last November, CTC expansion is a proven way to reduce child poverty and improve economic mobility, without meaningfully reducing workforce participation. Census data show that the expanded CTC has been incredibly impactful in addressing the poverty gap for Black and Latino children. This bipartisan package, which overwhelmingly passed the House in January, represents a significant step toward addressing child poverty and building a stronger economy overall. The Leadership Conference supports its passage.
