The Leadership Conference Statement on the Passing of John McCain
WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the passing of Senator John McCain:
“John McCain served his country with distinction – both in the Navy and as a senator. He stood against the cruel and inhumane treatment of prisoners of war, sought to improve our immigration laws, and demanded our campaign finance systems be fairer and more just. He was willing to speak truth to power – even when that person in power is the sitting president from his own party. Millions of Americans continue to enjoy the protections of the Affordable Care Act because John McCain rejected politics, stood on principles, and put country over party. While we may not have agreed on every policy issue, no one can question his integrity or the sincerity of his beliefs. Our nation is the better for his service, and he will be missed. Our deepest condolences go out to Cindy, his family, and all those who were touched by his service.”
