WASHINGTON — Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement as tens of thousands of people prepare to gather on Capitol Hill and rally for timely comprehensive immigration reform that includes a roadmap to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States:

“Immigration reform is a defining civil and human rights issue of our time. That’s why the tens of thousands of immigration advocates at today’s rally will include a cross-section of communities representing the great diversity of our nation.

As Americans, we believe that all men and women were created equal. We know that people who work hard to make our country a better place deserve to be treated fairly and to have an equal chance to share in the American Dream.

Our immigration laws are unjust, outdated, and unworkable. By any standard, it is simply untenable to have 11 million people living outside of the scope and protections of our laws and society. That’s why all Americans deserve a common sense immigration process that includes a roadmap for people who aspire to be citizens.

Today’s rally marks the day that Americans of all backgrounds came together in an effort to enact legislation that provides fair enforcement, restores due process, keeps families intact, and protects the rights of both native-born and immigrant workers.

Our nation’s immigrants, our economy, and the American people have waited long enough. The time for change is now.”
