WASHINGTON — Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Patricia Millett to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit:

“Today’s hearing on Patricia Millett is an important step forward in ensuring a fully staffed D.C. Circuit. From day one, Ms. Millett will be prepared to handle an array of legal issues that the D.C. Circuit addresses, having argued cases on constitutional law, national security, commercial disputes, civil rights, civil and commercial procedure, and administrative law.

Ms. Millett is a thoughtful, experienced, and mainstream legal figure whose lengthy qualifications are beyond debate. She has received the ‘Unanimously Well Qualified’ rating from the American Bar Association and the strong endorsement of seven former Solicitor Generals. She has argued 32 cases and issued dozens of briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court, 35 cases in the D.C. Circuit and 11other circuit courts of appeals, and four cases in state appellate courts.

Republicans who oppose a yes-or-no confirmation vote on Ms. Millett are overreaching. This court, in particular, needs thoughtful legal minds because it hears some of nation’s most complex and consequential cases.

We applaud President Obama for his commitment to fully staffing the D.C. Circuit and urge the Senate to abandon the obstruction of the past and swiftly confirm Patricia Millett.”
