Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure Starts With Transportation

Media 01.21.15

The Transportation Equity Caucus applauds President Obama for raising the critical issue of long-term, sustained investment in transportation infrastructure during his State of the Union address.  Robust investment is vital for developing equitable communities, connecting workers to employment and creating jobs.  The highest priorities for this investment must be to 1) create affordable and accessible transportation choices to millions of Americans that are transportation-disadvantaged, particularly low-income people, communities of color, and people with disabilities, and 2) expand training and job opportunities for workers who are traditionally underrepresented in the transportation workforce.  Congress and the Administration should set these priorities in place within federal surface transportation law, using the GROW AMERICA Act as a guide.  With the current law set to expire in fewer than 130 days, we urge Congress and the Administration to move quickly to pass transportation legislation driven by principles of economic and social equity.
