New Report: 2020 Census Could Miscount Millions of People of Color

WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference Education Fund, issued the following statement on the Urban Institute’s recent report showing that the 2020 Census could miscount millions of people of color and young children:

“This prospect of the 2020 Census producing a net national undercount of 4 million people – while double-counting members of some privileged communities – is alarming. Its data underscores how critical it is to secure adequate resources for census operations in conducting outreach to hard-to-count communities. The report also highlights why the Supreme Court must uphold the decisions of three federal district courts to remove the untested citizenship question from the 2020 Census. An inaccurate census would exacerbate systemic inequities for people of color and people with low incomes. We cannot ignore the red flags that this evidence poses. We must continue to fight against everything that will block a fair and accurate count.”
