WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in America:
“Trump, his administration, and his supporters in Congress, have clearly failed to meet the most basic needs of people in U.S. custody. This crisis has been tragically marked by the deaths of at least seven children, and the suffering of all those who continue to be detained in deplorable and inhumane conditions. Access to food, shelter, and daily necessities like soap and water should never depend on an individual’s immigration status.
“Migrants do not forfeit their humanity when they seek refuge in our country, but the Trump administration has placed punishment over principles, pinning those seeking asylum at the epicenter of a storm of its own making. Congress must demand clear requirements for basic human rights in any additional funding bill that passes this week. The inexcusable mistreatment of migrants, especially children under our watch, must end now.”
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
