WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding Virginia’s historic ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment:

“We celebrate this long-deserved victory, along with the advocates and activists around the country who never stopped fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment. Their work reminds us that it is never too late to correct the wrongs of the past. No one in this country should be denied equal protection of the laws because of their sex, and our Constitution must reflect those values. We laud the newly elected members of the legislature—including the many women of color who were tremendous champions of the ERA—who helped push it over the finish line. Their leadership demonstrates how far our country has come along the path to full equality and encourages us all to continue striving for an America as good as its ideals.”
