WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement as Congress continues to negotiate on the third Covid-19 stimulus bill:

“The onset of Covid-19 has laid bare the structural racism and barriers to opportunity that are entrenched in our society. As people look to our leaders for assistance, Congress must take steps to break down those barriers – not shore them up. By all accounts, the Republican proposal is woefully inadequate and must be scrapped. Congress must put politics aside and ensure that the final bill prioritizes working people over corporations, supports our most marginalized communities, and protects our democracy.”

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
