WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Department of Education’s final rule on Title IX:

“This final rule is an abomination and, if it takes effect, will silence sexual assault survivors and limit their educational opportunity. It is unconscionable to do this as students and institutions grapple with teaching and learning during a public health crisis. Further, the rule is the antithesis of what Title IX was intended to do. Instead of requiring schools to do more to prevent and respond to sexual violence and harassment, the rule would harm students. This is all part of this administration’s ongoing attempts to undermine the civil rights of students. All students deserve an educational environment free from sex discrimination and violence. We will work with our allies to fight this rule and send it to the dustbin.”

Last year, The Leadership Conference and 44 national and local education and civil rights groups wrote to the Department of Education on this rule. Read that letter here.
