WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s oral arguments today in California v. Texas:

“In the midst of a pandemic that has already cost at least 238,000 lives in America, the Trump administration continues to try to take health care away from millions of people. This blatant disregard for lives, especially for the 133 million individuals with pre-existing conditions who depend on the Affordable Care Act and the millions of people who live in states that expanded Medicaid, is dangerous and irresponsible. This lawsuit is based on absurd legal arguments. We have fought for a fair and just Supreme Court, and implore the Court to protect our health care and uphold the constitutionality of the law.”

In May 2020, The Leadership Conference joined the National Women’s Law Center, National Partnership for Women & Families, The Black Women’s Health Imperative, American Medical Women’s Association, and 76 other organizations in a “friend of the court” brief in this case. That amicus brief is available here.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
