WASHINGTON — Jesselyn McCurdy, interim executive vice president and managing director of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement regarding the urgent situation for those seeking to flee Afghanistan:
“The heartbreaking crisis in Afghanistan demands that our country live up to its tradition of welcoming people who need and deserve our protections. The Biden administration must do everything possible to quickly evacuate and resettle Afghans who are in urgent need of safety. That includes human rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQ advocates, as well as other vulnerable Afghan populations, including those who bravely assisted the United States. Time is of the essence. Human lives are at stake.”
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 220 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States.
