WASHINGTON Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director, fair courts program, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on the Senate’s vote to confirm Charlotte Sweeney to the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado:

“Our courts are in dire need of more judges like Charlotte Sweeney who are committed to civil rights and bring new viewpoints to the federal bench. Ms. Sweeney has dedicated her career to protecting and defending the rights of working people, bringing an underrepresented perspective to our federal courts. And as the first LGBTQ federal judge in the state of Colorado and the first openly LGBTQ woman to serve on any federal district court west of the Mississippi River, Ms. Sweeney brings much-needed diversity to the judiciary. We are heartened to see the Senate continue to answer our calls for an equal justice judiciary by confirming this exceptionally qualified nominee.
