Maya Wiley, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement:
“For more than 30 years, Congressman Frank was a leading champion for civil rights, working tirelessly – a mentality he referred to as ‘zealous pragmatism’ – for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, protecting civil liberties, expanding fair housing and lending, and reforming our immigration system. Congressman Frank led the effort to pass the Civil Liberties Act, which provided reparations to those who had been unjustly imprisoned under Japanese Internment, and he co-sponsored the largest consumer protection law passed in decades, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. In 2012, The Leadership Conference recognized Congressman Frank for his decades of brilliant work and honored him with the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil and Human Rights Award ‘for selfless and devoted service in the cause of equality.’ His legacy lives on in the civil rights community, as we work to advance his ideals and the justice he strove for.”
