WASHINGTON – Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement on the Senate’s votes to acquit President Trump following his impeachment by the House of Representatives:

“Every senator has sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. But today, they failed to honor that solemn duty. President Trump betrayed our democracy when he demanded foreign interference in our elections and obstructed Congress. The Senate has enabled his corruption — and there is no acquittal when there has been a cover up. There is only a cover up.

“It is a shameful day for our country when those in power face no consequences for violating the Constitution. We must now recommit ourselves to elections that are truly fair and free, and to protecting voting rights. Despite the president’s assaults on our government, we cannot — and will not — give up on our democracy.”
